In 1831, de Tocqueville made his famous trip to the United States of America, and was inspired by his travels to write Democracy in America. The United States of America has been an object for observation and assessment ever since, especially by Europeans. In the last several years, that assessment has grown especially fearful. Whether one looks at the health of American democracy, its economic system, or its cultural ethos, one finds reasons for concern. What is the “American Dream” today? What is the relationship between that dream and American identity? Is there any common narrative, any national mythology, connecting them anymore? Was there ever?
Come discuss these questions and ask your own! The lead professor will be AAU Lecturer, Robert Warren.
