Description | Taking as its focus a close consideration of three major Italian artists, Michelangelo, Caravaggio and Bernini, this course wil examine the developement of significant artistic movements from the High Renaissance to the Baroque. Michelangelo Buonarotti’s genius in painting, sculpture, and architecture epitomizes the sixteenth century High Renaissance, but at the same time his achievements paved the way for the Baroque style. The Baroque will be examined through the work of two of the most innovative artists of the 17th century: Caravaggio and Gian Lorenzo Bernini and their impact on European art in the Transalpine area. |
Learning Outcomes | -Identify, define and describe the main characteristics of the major Italian artworks and architecture of High Renaissance and Baroque using key terminology -Understand leading artists, and their art and architecture work within context, and apply knowledge and terminology of artistic/architectural styles to these examples -Discuss themes of representative examples of art and architecture of High Renaissance and Baroque and contextualize them within the main socio-cultural, and historical influences of their time. -Analyze works art and architecture of High Renaissance and Baroque using formal, stylistic, iconographic, and contextual methodologies |
