AAU is a global university with students, faculty, and staff from around the world. Our priority is the wellbeing of our community and we are actively monitoring the situation. This is a follow up to our last update published on March 10, 2020.

Following the announcement on March 10 by the Czech Government which banned the presence of students at schools and universities in Czechia effective Wednesday, March 11, AAU announced that virtual classroom instruction would begin on Friday, March 13 for an indefinite period.

Today, AAU has decided that virtual classroom teaching will begin Friday, March 13 and last for the rest of spring semester, 2020. Furthermore, AAU’s mid-term break is rescheduled to March 23 – 27, 2020.

Why is AAU making these changes?

  • As the COVID-19/coronavirus pandemic continues to worsen, many countries are urging their citizens to return home.

  • AAU understands that an indefinite return is causing significant confusion and anxiety among students, faculty and staff.

  • We want to give every student the opportunity to complete their semester’s coursework.

Why is AAU rescheduling the mid-term break?

  • The sudden shift from face-to-face to virtual classroom instruction requires a lot of work for faculty and staff to make sure we are meeting the same learning outcomes and the same quality of instruction.  We want to use this week for additional training and support for teachers.

How classes will work:

  • The specific way that your class will run will depend on the instructor and the subject matter.  Some examples may include: assigned readings with discussion questions or a written assignment; streaming videos of lectures; home assignments; PowerPoint slides with voice narration, etc.

  • AAU will use Microsoft Teams and NEO. Students and faculty should already have their credentials in their official AAU email.

  • Faculty will continue to take attendance and the attendance policy still applies.

What you need to do:

  • Make a plan for when, where and how you will attend your classes. While the campus is closed to students, you will be able to join classes from a location of your choice.  Do you have reliable internet and a backup plan? Will you use your phone, laptop, tablet? Do you have a quiet place where you can do your schoolwork where you won’t be interrupted?

  • Check your email for your Microsoft Teams credentials and download the Microsoft Teams app or plan to use your web browser.

  • Read your email carefully for instructions from your teachers and AAU’s IT department.
