Coursework will provide a platform for students to explore technique and process as well as their own creative pursuits. Particular emphasis will be placed on concept development, digital capture, editorial technique, digital presentation, and printing. Post-production software programs will be introduced, but not highlighted in this class. In addition to practical application, students will be introduced to a wide variety of contemporary visual artists through gallery visits and discussions. Upon completion of the course, students will have an improved understanding of digital photography in both form and function, laying the foundation for further exploration of the digital process. Teaching Methods: Lectures, Readings, Discussion, Presentations, and Workshop style instruction followed by fieldwork. Course Aims and Objectives: Describe and execute proper operation and of a digital camera To gain a working knowledge of shutter speeds, aperture settings, ISO Settings, light, and camera angles in order to provide desired images Name and understand the mechanics of a digital camera Calculate the equivalent relationships between shutter speeds, aperture settings, and film speeds. To instill an understanding of photographic concepts and vocabulary To discuss how and what photographs communicate through careful analysis of yours and your fellow students work. To create a series of images that convey a particular theme or concept as proposed by the student. To inform and educate the class as a whole on different photographers and photographic styles through individual presentations To provide a very broad overview of digital photography as a unique form of the medium so as to encourage a more holistic understanding of it as both an art form and a technical craft Required Course materials: Students will need: A Rudimentary digital camera A small flash drive to store and transfer images. Access to and use of a computer and internet outside of class Access to a photo printer Readings and Textbooks: The following texts will be brought to class by the instructor and will be available for use during class: Peter K. Marita Sturken and Lisa Cartwright. Practices of Looking, an introduction to visual culture. Additional and supplemental readings will be placed on the class blog in the form of direct links. Student Assessment: Students will be evaluated in the following manner: Class Participation: Attendance, Discussion, Group Work, Gallery: 15% Digital Journal (Blog or Flickr) 15% In-Class Shooting Exercises: 15% Written Test: 10% Long-term Project: Research, Planning, Proposals, Contact Sheets: 20% Final Presentation (printing, editing, statement.) 25% Attendance is necessary and you are expected to attend all class sessions. In addition you are expected to participate in all class discussion and group field exercises during the course of the semester. All technical demonstrations will take place during class and each will build upon the one preceding it, making it difficult to make up. Late assignments will only be accepted up to one class late, and can only receive a maximum of the possible points offered. Each assignment will be accompanied by an individual assignment brief. Lecture: Introduction to Digital Mechanics Discussion: Getting to know your camera Homework: Bring in examples of someone or something exclusive to digital photography for discussion Homework: Bring in three ideas to pitch for your course long project. Week 2 June 21: Getting Technical Discussion: Discuss items, images, and websites brought in for discussion on digital essence. Continue discussion by going over three ideas. Everyone brought in.
